                            The Cube
              Corel's Quarterly Linux eNewsletter
                      Issue 1, August 2000
                 -----------------------------

I would like to welcome everyone to the very first issue of "The Cube",
Corel's Linux eNewsletter. These are very busy times for us here at Corel
and the Linux Product Group is no exception. We are very excited to be able
to contribute to the success of the GNU/Linux OS and are pleased with the
overwhelming requests for information from you, our users.

We're in a new era of computing. The Internet has taught us that open
standards and sharing ideas are key factors to the expansion of computing in
modern society. The development of GNU/Linux follows that same Darwinian
model of innovation. Ideas that benefit society flourish while those that
inhibit us fall by the wayside.

We at Corel feel honored to be a catalyst in helping to bring the new era of
computing to you. We would like you to consider us your partners in this
relentless pursuit to better integrate computing into our society. Give us
your feedback! Let us know what it is that makes GNU/Linux work for you and
let us know what is missing. We want to ensure that the format of this
newsletter is useful to you, so be sure to let us know if there's any way we
can improve it.

Sincerely,

Rene Schmidt
VP, Linux Product Group
Corel Corporation

6. XFree86 4.0! Installing it Under Corel LINUX OS
-------------------------------------------------------------------
XFree86 4.0, the latest freely redistributable implementation of the
X-Window operating system, is on the cutting edge in that it is still fairly
new and under heavy development. While there is still work to be done before
Corel makes it a mainstay in its Linux operating system, it includes many
features that you may find appealing or necessary before it officially
becomes a part of Corel LINUX OS ... Read the rest of this article at

Developer's Corner

7. Corel and the Wine Project: Getting Better With Age
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Wine is a software technology that Corel is using to port many of its
existing Windows applications (WordPerfect Office 2000, CorelDRAW Graphics
Suite, etc.) to Linux. This process can be done in a relatively short period
of time and without making many changes to the applications. The Wine
project, initiated by Bob Amstadt in 1993 and maintained by Alexander
Julliard since 1994, has grown to over 350,000 lines of code written by more
than 140 developers worldwide. Corel has been contributing to Wine for
about two years and all of its changes are made available to the Open Source
community.

Wine can load selected Windows DLLs and EXEs and execute them under Linux.
It can also be used as a library that is linked with natively compiled
applications. The acronym Wine stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator" -- you
don't need a copy of Windows to run Wine applications. Programs don't
necessarily run more slowly under Wine and some operations may even run more
quickly -- it all depends on the implementation. For the most part, the
end user does not need to be aware of Wine when running applications. For
more information on Corel and the Wine project, please visit

8. WineHQ Being Hosted by Corel
-----------------------------------------
WineHQ (http://www.winehq.com), a Web site which provides information about
using and developing Wine technology, announced early this summer that Corel
would become its new host.

Although Corel is now hosting the Web site, all decisions on its direction
and development remain in the hands of the Wine community. An independent
board is being established, consisting of Wine community members, to ensure
that community management of the site remains. For more information on this
exciting announcement, please visit

Linux Gaming
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
10. The Bleak Past Makes Way for a Bright Future for Linux Gamers
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
I confess. I'm a gamer -- have been since heatseakers were blowing up
Kilrathi and Lemmings were falling off cliffs. And, fortunately, our
numbers seem to be growing everyday. But Linux gamers have always been the
runt of the litter when compared to the quality and quantity of games that
can be found on the other two "big" operating systems. It's been a bleak
existence with only the occasional Open Source game and a couple of big name
games years after their initial release on other platforms. But all of this
is about to change...

Now, thanks to companies such as Loki games (http://www.lokigames.com) and
upgrades in the XFree86 graphics platform, you can expect more high quality
games to be available for Linux in the near future. Don't believe me? Corel
has already bundled big-name titles such as Railroad Tycoon II(tm): Gold
Edition Limited Version and Civilization(R): Call to Power(tm) strategy game
limited edition with its Linux products, and plans to add more games in
upcoming releases. Add to this the impressive list of games that Loki has
released or is developing (Quake3, Soldier of Fortune, Sid Meir's Alpha
Centauri, etc.), and the future looks pretty bright for Linux gamers.

Although Linux gaming still has some obstacles (such as limited hardware
compatibility) in its path, it is clearly pointed in the right direction for
the future.

Happy Hunting!
